Barbados mourns the passing of one of its most beloved sons. Named a National Hero by an Act of Parliament in 1998, Sir Garfield Sobers is remembered the world over as cricket’s greatest all-rounder — a batsman, bowler and fielder without equal.

His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 stood as the highest individual Test score for 36 years, and his six sixes in a single over in 1968 remain among the game’s most celebrated feats. Knighted in 1975 for his services to cricket, he carried the name of Barbados with grace and greatness across the world.
